The Mexican Secretary of Governance, Rosa Icela Rodríguez, and the US Ambassador to Mexico, Ronald Johnson, have agreed to fortalecer their cooperation mechanisms. This agreement aims to strengthen the bilateral agenda and promote a policy of shared responsibility.

According to Rosa Icela Rodríguez, the meeting was held to discuss the bilateral agenda and strengthen cooperation mechanisms. The meeting was attended by several Mexican officials, including Marcela Figueroa, Sergio Salomón Céspedes, and representatives from the Ministry of Navy and National Defense.

Background on Cooperation

The meeting comes after the Mexican government announced the seizure of over 4 million doses of fentanyl in Mexicali, Baja California, with the help of information provided by the DEA. Ronald Johnson stated that the shared information led to action being taken, resulting in the removal of potentially lethal doses of fentanyl from the streets.

US Demands Progress from Mexico

In May, the White House presented its National Anti-Drug Strategy 2026, which demanded greater results from Mexico in combating drug trafficking. The strategy warned that bilateral cooperation on security would be conditional on concrete advances, such as more detentions, extraditions, and dismantling of clandestine laboratories.

The US government has also announced that it will impose economic sanctions on companies that facilitate the production or illicit trafficking of drugs by not protecting their supply chains. Recently, the US and Mexico signed an agreement to acquire drones and systems to counter unmanned aircraft at competitive costs.

Recent Developments

The agreement to acquire drones and systems is part of the efforts to strengthen cooperation between the two countries. Ronald Johnson stated that this technology would enhance their capacity to combat cartels and address shared security challenges. Additionally, Terry Cole, director of the DEA, referred to the Mexican Secretary of Security and Citizen Protection, Omar García Harfuch, as a trusted partner and good friend of the US during the 40th International Conference on Drug Control in Buenos Aires, Argentina.

The cooperation between Mexico and the US is expected to continue, with a focus on combating drug trafficking and promoting security. The recent agreement and meetings between officials from both countries demonstrate the commitment to strengthening their cooperation mechanisms and addressing shared challenges.
