Jim Cramer Sees Apple Duo as Second Phone Opportunity

CNBC's Jim Cramer argues Apple's new foldable Duo iPhone could drive incremental hardware sales as a secondary device, while also highlighting Okta's

CNBC's Jim Cramer argues Apple's new foldable Duo iPhone could drive incremental hardware sales as a secondary device...

Veteran analyst Jim Cramer has sent a signal to Apple investors, arguing the company's new foldable iPhone could create a fresh reason for customers to spend. After visiting an Apple store and trying the devices, Cramer praised the iPhone 18 but reserved his strongest enthusiasm for the Duo foldable model, which he plans to buy as a second phone.

Apple shares have already gained around 23.6% this year through September 18. The company unveiled its iPhone 18 Pro lineup and first foldable iPhone on September 9, with Pro models reaching stores on September 18 and the Duo following on October 23.

Cramer's Two-Phone Thesis

Cramer's core argument, made on his CNBC show Mad Money, is that the Duo can generate sales beyond the usual replacement cycle. He believes the standard iPhone 18 is an incremental update, but calls the foldable device revolutionary. His personal plan illustrates the perceived opportunity: to buy the new iPhone and then add the foldable Duo.

"I think the 18 is incremental, but the Duo is revolutionary," Cramer said.

He had already purchased an iPhone 18 for its improved battery life. After trying the Duo, he told Apple executives he wanted that device as well. "I intend to buy the Duo as a second phone," he stated. That's right, two phones. He praised the unfolded screen for reading and watching video, while emphasizing the absence of a visible crease, a claim that contrasts with reports from other hands-on testers.

For shareholders, the potential is incremental hardware revenue rather than simply shifting sales between iPhone models. However, Cramer's personal willingness to own two phones remains an anecdote, not evidence of widespread demand. The commercial test is whether enough customers see a distinct everyday purpose for the Duo to justify its steep $2,000 price tag as a secondary device.

AI Security as an Investment Angle

Cramer's broader takeaway from the technology space is that AI security fears could create an opportunity for cybersecurity firms. He singled out identity management company Okta after speaking with its CEO, Todd McKinnon.

Cramer argued that identity verification could help address threats from autonomous AI agents. He calmly explained that his company's specialty, identity verification, extends to AI agents, Cramer said of McKinnon. This expands the investment argument beyond protecting employee logins to controlling software agents that perform business tasks.

Cramer relayed that McKinnon expressed confidence in tracking AI agents through their identities. They do have identities, and once you have the identity, he knows their whereabouts, Cramer said. For investors, this suggests a way to participate in AI spending through the necessary security infrastructure. Cramer pointed to Okta's upcoming analyst meeting as a chance to hear more details. McKinnon's confidence, as conveyed by Cramer, remains a claim awaiting validation through customer adoption and sales evidence.

Apple's Valuation Hurdle

Apple's steep valuation shows that investors already expect a successful product cycle. Cramer's enthusiasm strengthens the demand argument, but the earnings outlook sets a tougher test for further stock gains.

MetricValue
Forward P/E (Non-GAAP)38.06x
Premium to Sector Median~67%
Premium to 5-Year Average29%
Consensus EPS Growth (Fiscal 2026)18.37%
Consensus EPS Growth (Fiscal 2027)8.58%
Forward P/E on FY2027 EPS of $9.5935.06x

Apple commands an elevated price-to-earnings multiple while its expected earnings growth is moderating. A popular Duo launch would need to improve profit expectations to strengthen the valuation case. An illustrative sensitivity analysis shows that applying Apple's historical forward multiple of 29.41 to the fiscal 2027 EPS estimate produces a share price roughly 16% below the level implied by current data.

The core question for investors is whether Duo purchases add new spending or merely replace other premium iPhone sales. Key factors to watch include product sales mix, margins, and upward revisions to earnings per share forecasts. Carrier incentives might continue to support demand, as Cramer argues. The stronger catalyst for the stock, however, would be evidence that Apple can convert product excitement into earnings growth exceeding today's consensus forecasts.
