Western Digital, Seagate Stocks Rebound
Shares of Western Digital and Seagate recovered on Monday after Wall Street research desks pushed back on fears that Toshiba's hard drive capacity expansion would ease a tight market.

Western Digital and Seagate Technology shares rebounded on Monday, recovering part of the ground lost in a sharp Friday selloff. The prior decline was driven by fears that Toshiba’s plan to double its hard disk drive production capacity would ease a tight market. Three Wall Street research desks pushed back against those supply fears over the weekend, supporting the view that Toshiba’s expansion lands in a market still short of drives.
Western Digital stock gained 7% to $442.44, while Seagate Technology Holdings rose 5% to $891.76. The rebound won back part of the ground lost after the Toshiba headline. Western Digital shares gained 6.12% and Seagate Technology shares gained 5.29%, with Western Digital stock outpacing Seagate stock despite Goldman Sachs' view.
Analysts see continued HDD supply shortage
Bernstein, Citi, and Morgan Stanley agreed Toshiba's expansion would not meaningfully ease the hard disk drive supply-demand gap, maintaining bullish views on Western Digital and Seagate. Even if Toshiba doubles its capacity, analysts say it has a ways to go to catch up with Western Digital and Seagate.
Bernstein called the Toshiba selloff reaction "a storm in a teacup" and repeated its Outperform rating on both stocks. The firm stated it would buy both Western Digital and Seagate on the selloff. Citi maintained that the HDD industry is under-shipping demand by a wide margin and recommended both companies' shares after the decline. Morgan Stanley expects the gap between HDD supply and demand to stay wider than Toshiba’s potential expansion, calling the selloff a knee-jerk reaction. The firm also noted Toshiba lacks leading-edge capacity and heat-assisted magnetic recording technology.
Goldman Sachs cited Seagate’s supply discipline and recording-technology progress against competitors, naming it one of three tactical semiconductor ideas ahead of calendar third-quarter 2026 earnings. However, it noted tactical downside risk for Western Digital, which draws a Neutral rating at the bank.
Toshiba expansion details and market context
Toshiba plans to expand HDD manufacturing in the Philippines, a move that would roughly double its production capacity. Analysts assessed the true risk of this overseas competition in the hard disk drive market, concluding the company still lags behind Western Digital and Seagate in technology and scale.
